Almancil, 20km west of Faro, is a Portuguese village that has managed very much to retain its traditional character. The village is more or less bisected by the old main coast road (prior to the building of the EN125 bypass).
At Almancil one can enjoy reasonably priced meals, snacks and drinks in traditional Portuguese bars and restaurants after perhaps browsing the array of interesting little shops.
Just 2km down the road from the centre of Almancil there is also the church of St Lawrence (Igreja de São Lourenço). The interior of this Romanesque building is quite magnificent, covered in the finest traditional blue and white tile-work (“azulejos”) dating from 1729 and depicting scenes from the life and martyrdom of St Lawrence. It is said to be one of the finest examples of its kind in Portugal.
